Enriching the berth allocation problem

In this paper, a rich model for the Berth Allocation Problem is presented that takes into account real-life features often ignored in other models, such as vessel priorities, preferred berthing locations and handling time considerations. The model is validated on real-life data, showing an impressive improvement (63%) of the difference between preferred berth and planned berth. Taking into account the preferred berthing location reflects the interplay between berth allocation and the stacking of the containers. As such, the model presented here can be seen as a first step towards an integrated model that also considers other port terminal processes such as quay crane assignment and yard planning.
